John Varga received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in New York City. He was an intern and resident in medicine at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, subsequently completing a fellowship in rheumatology at Boston University School of Medicine in Massachusetts, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

Dr Varga is author of more than 200 articles and book chapters, and has edited two books. He serves as section editor for Current Rheumatology Reports. He is a fellow of the American College of Rheumatology and the American College of Physicians, and a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Rheumatology. He chairs the Medical Advisory Board of the Scleroderma Foundation. He is listed in Best Doctors of America, 2005-2006.

Dr Varga's laboratory research focuses on fibroblast biology and fibrosis, while his clinical research interests include the diagnosis, classification and treatment of systemic sclerosis and related fibrotic diseases.
